THE BREADWINNER Q&A (with Anita Doron & Saara Chaudry)
March 16 @ 13:45| Free
ANITA DORON was born in Transcarpathia, a little known land of nomadic ghosts, barley mush and apricot brandy. She was one of the youngest published poets in the former USSR and grew up in a family of high altitude mountaineers. At the age of 12, Anita’s first film – an environmental protest piece – raised the ire of Soviet bureaucracy and set her on a path to cinema.
Anita’s films have been exhibited at the Toronto International Film Festival, South By South West, The Future of Cinema Salon at Cannes, and at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Her latest feature film, The Lesser Blessed, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a Canadian Screen Awards nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (she lost to Salman Rushdie). Anita has been invited to direct Sailor Girl for Markham Street Films and Immersion for Evanstone Films. She wrote the screenplay for the upcoming animated feature The Breadwinner, where Angelina Jolie serves as executive producer. Currently, Anita is working on a Paris-based, sci-fi fantasy graphic novel about the human microbiome and developing several new screenplays.
SAARA CHAUDRY is a Canadian actor, dancer and singer that began her career with small parts in TV productions such as Degrassi, Combat Hospital, Desperately Seeking Santa and Isabelle Dances into the Spotlight.
Saara made her theatre debut as Little Cosette in the 25th anniversary Mirvish Production of Les Miserables at the Princess of Wales theatre. She had the honour of performing the role on opening night and at a special gala benefit with Colm Wilkinson. She won a 2014 Broadway World Award for best female performer in a featured role, was nominated for a Young Artists Award for best theatre performance and was also nominated for a Dora Award as a member of the Les Miserables ensemble.
After her theatre run, Saara returned to television where she played the role of Howie on Nickelodeon’s Max & Shred, and guest starred on PBS Kids Odd Squad. Saara just completed filming on season 4 of Sinking Ship’s Emmy and Canadian Screen nominated Dino Dana as Saara, Dana’s older sister, and is looking forward to filming the Dino Dana Movie this summer. Saara is currently filming on Universal Kids/Hulu’s new tween series Holly Hobbie, where she plays Amy, Holly’s best friend.
Saara has also worked on several animated projects and was honoured to be nominated for a 2017 Canadian Screen Award for her role as Clara in the Canadian Screen Award winner the Curse of Clara: A Holiday Tale. She is thrilled to be the voice of Parvana in the Oscar, Golden Globe and Canadian Screen Award nominated feature film, The Breadwinner, based on the novel by one of her favourite authors, Deborah Ellis, for which she most recently won the ACTRA award for best voice performance. She is currently working on the animated series, Colorforms, and is excited to be the voice of Carmen in Luna Around the World.
When not filming, Saara enjoys going to school, singing with her girl band Girl-Powr and being an advocate for gender equality and girls education.
